Fall is a beautiful time of year to visit Matthiessen State Park. From the colorful foliage along the hiking trails to the dramatic canyons that run through the landscape, this Northern Illinois park is a joy to explore during autumn. Matthiessen State Park boasts more than five miles of trails for walking and hiking. The steep cliffs and rugged canyons create wonderful photo opportunities around every corner. During October and November, you can capture the magic of fall with beautiful foliage. If you like to go mountain biking or horseback riding, there are nine miles of trails to explore. When the snow starts falling, you can hit the trails for cross-country skiing. There's also an archery range, picnic area for families, and even an airplane field for model planes!
