About the Tour
Towering cliffs and white-capped waters carry you through some of the most picturesque scenery in the state. If you enjoy fishing, be sure to bring your gear and a picnic lunch, because the river is full of spots to toss in a line. The run is 9.5 miles, and even though its self-guided, experienced rafters will offer full instructions before you push-off. No matter your skill level, the waters are guaranteed to satisfy, ranked at roughly Class III out of six. Be sure to wear clothing you don't mind getting wet, along with an old pair of tennis or watershoes (flip-flops tend to get lost). You may also want to bring a cooler for beverages, sunscreen, and a lariat for your sunglasses.
Starved Rock State Park
On weekends and holidays, peacefully paddle the Illinois River with canoe rentals at the water near the Visitor's Center parking lot. The price is $30 an hour, limited to 3 passengers per vessel.
