With a beautiful landscape of dramatic canyons, rock formations, streams, forest and prairie, Matthiessen State Park is a paradise adventure and recreation. Explore 5 miles of well-marked hiking trails through steep cliffs and deep canyons and marvel at geological wonders, colorful rock formations, cascading waterfalls and abundant wildlife and native plants. Matthiessen State Park also offers nine miles of trails for horseback riding and mountain biking, 6 miles of cross-country ski trails, an archery range, picnic areas, and a radio-controlled model airplane field.

Park Activities

Matthiessen State Park is a hiking and biking utopia with miles of scenic trails through the canyons, rock formations, forest and waterfalls. The park offer 9 miles of equestrian and mountain biking trails and 6 miles of cross-country ski trails with ski rentals available on winter weekends. The park also has a field archery range and radio-controlled model airplane field at the Vermilion River Area. Enjoy an afternoon picnic and marvel at the beautiful rock formations and diverse wildlife.

Horseback Riding

The park offers 9 miles of horseback riding trails and an equestrian campground for horseback riders and their horses near the Dells Area entrance. The horseback trails are open from April 15 to October 31.

    Matthiessen State Park has five miles of well-marked hiking and walking trails through deep canyons and steep cliffs. Hike only the marked trails as other areas may be dangerous.

    The Dells Area of the park is a peaceful setting for picnics and an afternoon of relaxation. This area has picnic tables, water fountains and a playground, as well as a large parking lot. Explore the restored fort built or hop on the trail to the Cascade Falls area. To the south, the Vermilion River Area offers picnic shelters, tables, grills and drinking fountains.
